Early luggage was made of wood or other heavy materials. With the popularization of air travel, luggage materials have shifted to lighter hard plastic or fabric. Most models come with built in small wheels and pull rods for easy towing. After 2010, four wheel luggage emerged; its wheels can rotate 360 degrees, allowing effortless gliding on flat ground. In addition, luggage can be divided into hard shell and soft shell types by outer casing. Hard shell luggage is more drop resistant and suitable for belongings requiring ample protection. Soft shell luggage is generally lighter and offers more flexible storage capacity. However, the zippers of soft shell luggage are prone to bursting if overstuffed.
